This Week's Monkees Film & TV Almanac (11/4-10/07)
Now Playing: Breakfast With The Beatles on WTIX-FM

NOVEMBER 4, 1972

“The Monkees Get Out More Dirt”, Episode No. 29 of The Monkees (prod. #47??, first aired on NBC April 3, 1967), was repeated @ 1:00 p.m. (EST) on ABC.

NOVEMBER 6, 1967

"The Card-Carrying Red Shoes"
(prod. #47??) first aired @ 7:30 p.m. (EST) on NBC as the 41st episode of The Monkees.

The sponsor was Kellogg’s™, and the song featured was “She Hangs Out” written by Jeff Barry.

NOVEMBER 6, 1968

HEAD
(prod. #8888), a motion picture starring that popular TV rockband The Monkees, opened at the Studio Cinema and Greenwich Theaters in New York City.

A Raybert Production of A Columbia Pictures Release, directed by Monkees TV producer Bob Rafelson (his first film), written and produced by Rafelson and Jack Nicholson, and executive-produced by The Monkees TV show co-producer Bert Schneider, it featured many movie, sports and TV icons by the likes of Victor Mature, Sonny Liston, Annette Funicello, Carol Doda, Ray Nitschke, and a youthful Teri Garr (billed in the movie as Terry Garr). The songs featured in the movie were “Porpoise Song” by Gerry Goffin & Carole King, “Circle Sky” by Michael Nesmith, “Can You Dig It” and “Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again” by Peter Tork, “As We Go Along” by Carole King & Toni Stern, and “Daddy’s Song” by Nilsson.

Trivia Footnote: The principal photography was a 3-month, 10-day shoot between February and May 1968 in Screen Gems Studio 7 and on location in California (Vincent Thomas Bridge, San Pedro; Pasadena Rose Bowl, Pasadena; Bronson Canyon; Palm Springs), Utah (Valley Auditorium, Salt Lake City), and the Bahamas. Unfortunately, a misleading ad campaign (a balding man’s face? No indication of the group appearing in the film?) and a mistimed release date, due to a painfully prolonged postproduction process (November 6, 1968? Two months after The Monkees TV show’s official cancellation [and the day after Richard M. Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey in a knockdown, dragout vie for The Presidency!]?) helped sabotage this otherwise fun-loving crowd pleaser, which landed with a tumultuous thud at the box-office with a meager $16,111 in ticket sales. But HEAD has over the years developed quite a cult following among moviegoers and Monkees fans.

NOVEMBER 6, 1971

“I've Got A Little Song Here”, Episode No. 12 of The Monkees (prod. #4707, aired on NBC November 28, 1966 and June 26, 1967), was repeated @ 12 noon (EST) on CBS, with a new song added: "Steam Engine" written by Chip Douglas.

NOVEMBER 7, 1966

“The Chaperone”
(prod. #4711) first aired @ 7:30 p.m. (EST) on NBC as the 9th episode of The Monkees.

Sponsored by Kellogg’s™, this episode featured 3 songs: “This Just Doesn't Seem To Be My Day” by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, “Take A Giant Step” by Carole King & Gerry Goffin, and “You Just May Be The One” by Michael Nesmith. And if you were watching this week, the original commercials you would've seen were Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes (:30), Black Label Aftershave by Yardley (:45), Slicker Dolly Kits by Yardley (:15), Kellogg's Corn Flakes (:30), Kellogg's Pop Tarts (:30) and The Monkees for Kellogg's Rice Kirispies (:30).

NOVEMBER 7, 1970

"Hillbilly Honeymoon" (a.k.a. "Double Barrell Shotgun Wedding"), Episode No. 39 of The Monkees (prod. #47??, aired on NBC October 23, 1967 and March 18, 1968), was repeated @ 12:30 p.m. (EST) on CBS.

NOVEMBER 8, 1969

"Mijacogeo" (a.k.a. "The Frodis Caper"), Episode No. 58 of The Monkees (prod. #4722, first aired on NBC March 25, 1968), was repeated @ 12 noon (EST) on CBS, with a new song added: "I Never Thought It Peculiar," written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart.

Today's MF&TVV Updates
Now Playing: Breakfast With The Beatles on WTIX-FM

This week's Featured Monkees Episode is No. 25, “Alias Micky Dolenz” (prod. #4726, aired on NBC March 6, 1967).

Also, for “Find The Monkees” (a.k.a. "The Audition"), its synopsis is enhanced (courtesy of I Luv The Monkees! Monkees episode guide), its sponsor that week has been corrected, and added a listing of original commercials which aired with it the evening of its firstrun telecast on NBC! (It's amazing at how informative a simple eBay auction listing can be!)

OCTOBER 30, 1967

"Monkees Marooned"
(prod. #47??) first aired @ 7:30 p.m. (EST) on NBC as the 40th episode of The Monkees.

It was sponsored by Yardley Of London™, and the songs, produced by Chip Douglas, were “Daydream Believer” written by John Stewart and "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round" (in an alternate version with an extended fade) written by Michael Murphy.

Trivia Footnote: This was the last filmed episode of The Monkees to feature Michael Nesmith speaking with his old voice; he went to have a tonsillectomy right after "Monkees Marooned" wrapped.

OCTOBER 30, 1971

“I Was A Teenage Monster,” Episode No. 18 of The Monkees (prod. #47??, first aired on NBC January 16, 1967), was repeated @ noon (EST) on CBS (and just in time for Halloween, too!), with a new song added: "Good Clean Fun," written by Michael Nesmith.

OCTOBER 31, 1966

“Don't Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth”
(prod. #4708) first aired @ 7:30 p.m. (EST) on NBC as the 8th episode of The Monkees.

Slicker and Black Label by Yardley Of London™ were the sponsors, and all musical numbers written & produced by Michael Nesmith: “All The King’s Horses” & “Papa Gene’s Blues.”

Trivia Footnote: “Don't Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth” was the first official Monkees episode to be produced, directed by producer Bob Rafelson. He would go on to direct 5 further episodes of the series (Episode Nos. 3, “Monkee Versus Machine”, 5, “The Spy Who Came In From The Cool”, 17, “The Case Of The Missing Monkee”, 32, “The Monkees On Tour”, and 54, "The Monkees In Paris"), 2 of which he also wrote (#32, “The Monkees On Tour”, and 54, "The Monkees In Paris"), and, of course, he went on to direct (as well as write and produce with Jack Nicholson) his first movie: The Monkees' 1968 feature film HEAD.

OCTOBER 31, 1970

“The Monkees At The Movies”, Episode No. 31 of The Monkees (prod. #47??, first aired on NBC Apr. 17, 1967), was repeated @ 12:30 p.m. (EST) on CBS.

Friday, October 24, 1997. A red-letter date in Internet and Monkees fan history.
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Happy 10th, MF&TVV!

It was a full 31 years after “The Monkees In A Ghost Town” (prod. #4704) aired first-run on NBC as Episode No. 7 of The Monkees television series.

On the very afternoon of this date, the seeds of a new Monkees fansite were sown, and of course would fully blossom over the years.

I, Aaron Handy III, a Commercial Art/Visual Communications major at Delgado Community College, armed myself with a free account @ Tripod, settled down in in a computer lab, took keyboard in hand and gave life to The Monkees Film & TV Vault, a Monkees fan page (loosely patterned after Louis Colli's The Monkees Music Vault) which is a comprehensive guide to The Monkees' filmed work, on TV and the big screen, the product of 10+ long years' worth of research, and (for my money) the first-ever fully detailed account of The Monkees' film and television history. And today marks a pivotal, important, and happy event for the site: its Aluminum Anniversary (10 years!!) online!A deeply felt thanks to all of you, for all your love, support, and many invaluable contributions which has guaranteed The Monkees Film & TV Vault's impressive decade on The World Wide Web. 10 years could not have been possible without your great patronage.

Not long after The Monkees Film & TV Vault came into being, I had a disclaimer placed under the masthead on the front page which read "Quite Arguably THE BIGGEST Monkees Filmography In History!!!" I have since removed it, as it made me sound conceited. But, interestingly enough, after 10 years' worth of numerous updates, contributions, additions, revisions and deletions down the line, The Monkees Film & TV Vault has unwittingly lived up to that disclaimer in spades. (Maybe I should think of restoring it? Nah...)

Thanks again, and Monkeemania forever!

BEGINNING OUR NEXT DECADE ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB...
