In Memoriam: BEN LANE (1912-2007)
Mood:  sad
Now Playing: Breakfast With The Beatles on WTIX-FM
Topic: Another one gone...

Another member of The Monkees' celebrated crew is remembered:

Ben Lane, one of the 1937 founding members of our Motion Picture Guild, passed away of natural causes on Sunday, June 10, 2007. A Chicago native who started his film career as a makeup artist working on the film "The Good Earth" in 1934, Ben Lane worked on some of the best known faces in Hollywood during the "Golden Era", and was named director of Make-up for Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, Warner Brothers Television and Warner Brothers in 1955 and held that position until his retirement in 1980. Ben was a lifetime honorary member of the International Society of Makeup Artists and Los Angeles Mayor, Sam Yorty proclaimed January 14, 1972 "Ben Lane Day" when Ben was installed as President of the Show Business Shrine Club.

During his career, Ben was internationally known for his make-up work on such stars as Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Greer Garson, Ava Gardner, Spencer Tracy, Judy Garland and many, many more. Ben contributed greatly to the film industry during the transition from black and white to color by developing natural-looking makeup. He felt that his crowning achievement was for his transformation of actor Godfrey Cambridge from a black to a white man for the film "The Watermelon Man". He received national media attention which was rare for a makeup artist at that time, and Look Magazine preserved the achievement with photographs and text of Lane at work on Cambridge. Ben put himself through a different kind of transformation as a part of his work for charity.

He was a frequent volunteer for the City of Hope and the Masons and used to perform as a clown for the Shriner's annual circus. He became an advisor to clowns nationwide. Ben was a 33rd degree Mason, Masonry's highest honor and was a founding member of the Scottish Rite in Palm Springs. He was also a disguise consultant to the Los Angeles Police Department, the United States Department of Justice, and Federal Bureau of Investigation. In 1980 Ben was nominated for an Emmy award for his work on "Salem's Lot." Even in retirement, Ben was constantly asked to write a tell-all book, give speeches and makeup demonstrations but he always told them the same thing - no, I'm tired. Services for Ben Lane are private and for family only. He will be interred at Hillside Memorial Park in West Los Angeles beside his mother, brother, sister and son.

He is survived by his wife of more than 67 years, Edith; sister Trudy (Schoenfeld); and his son, Robert. Ben's other son, Steve was also a 706 makeup artist who passed away in 1969 and his brother, Lou Lane was also a makeup artist with local 706 who passed away in 1980. Ben was also brother-in-law to Don Schoenfeld, former Makeup Department Head for Lorimar Studios, and uncle of Kenneth Paul Schoenfeld, Journeyman makeup artist. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Ben's name to St. Jude's Hospital or a charity associated with the Masons.

Published in The Desert Sun on 6/21/2007.

His screen credit as Make-Up Supervisor is forever immortalized in the end titles of The Monkees television series, which of course is part of his magnamous resume.

This Week's Monkees Music & TV Almanac (7/8-14/07)
Now Playing: Breakfast With The Beatles on WTIX-FM

JULY 8, 1968

“The Monstrous Monkee Mash”, Episode No. 50 of The Monkees (prod. #4767, aired on NBC January 22, 1968), was repeated @ 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on NBC.

The sponsors of the week were Walt Disney Productions (The One And Only, Genuine, Original Family Band [Buena Vista, 1968]), Ban and Hi-C, and the commercials shown were: Ban, Clairol Midnight Sun, and Hi-C.

JULY 8, 1972

“Fairytale”, Episode No. 48 of The Monkees (prod. #4748, aired on NBC January 8 and June 24, 1968), was repeated @ noon (EDT) on CBS.

JULY 10, 1967

“Captain Crocodile”, Episode No. 23 of The Monkees (prod. #4730, aired on NBC February 20, 1967), was repeated @ 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on NBC, with a new song added: “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” written by Gerry Goffin & Carole King and produced by Douglas Farthing Hatlelid. This retelecast coincided with “Pleasant Valley Sunday”'s release on the A-side of the Colgems #66-1007 single, b/w a newly woodshedded remake of Boyce & Hart’s “Words”.

Sponsored this week by Yardley Of London™, the original commercials you would have seen were: Heartbreaker Eye Compact By Yardley (:30), Glimmerick by Yardley (:30), Jimmy Durante for Kellogg's Corn Flakes (1:00), and Clairol Midnight Sun (1:00).

Trivia Footnote: During a performance on Capt. Crocodile's show, Michael fangs to The Cap, "Either you let us play, or we quit!"...a catchcry which would become alarmingly prophetic in The Monkees knockdown, dragout, yet successful battle for the right to play their own music. Don Kirshner's ousting as a result of this had a profound effect on this episode; in the scene where The Monkees get The Crocodile Corps to sit down and listen to a story, Micky originally starts to read, "Once upon a time in the land of Kirshner..." That was when The Man With The Golden Ear was still a valid member of the Screen Gems/Monkees community. However, when "Captain Crocodile" was renetworkcast, Kirshner was long gone from the picture, and its soundtrack was altered not just to include Goffin and King's "Pleasant Valley Sunday", but to change Micky's story introduction as well: "Once upon a time, in the land of Schnieder..." (after creator/coproducer Bert Schnieder).

JULY 10, 1971

“The Monkees In A Ghost Town”, Episode No. 7 of The Monkees (prod. #4704, aired on NBC October 24, 1966 and July 17, 1967), was repeated @ 12:30 p.m. (EDT) on CBS.

JULY 11, 1970

“Don't Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth”, Episode No. 8 of The Monkees (prod. #4708, aired on NBC October 31, 1966), was repeated @ 12:30 p.m. (EDT) on CBS, with a new song added: "I Never Thought It Peculiar," written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart.

JULY 14, 1973

"Find The Monkees" (a.k.a. "The Audition"), Episode No. 19 of The Monkees (prod. #4721, aired on NBC January 23, 1967), was repeated @ 1:00 p.m. EDT on ABC.
