This Week's Monkees TV Almanac (3/22-28/09)
Now Playing: Law & Order on my DVR

MARCH 24, 1973

The Monkees was preempted on ABC by Soul Unlimited.

MARCH 25, 1968

"Mijacogeo" (a.k.a. "The Frodis Caper")
(prod. #4722) first aired @ 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on NBC as the 58th and final firstrun episode of The Monkees television series. Micky Dolenz cowrites and directs.

Kellogg’s™ sponsored the show that week, and the final Monkees song of the series was “Zor And Zam” written by John & Bill Chadwick and produced by The Monkees. It was the second of 2 Monkees-produced tracks used on The Monkees TV show, following the appearance of The Monkees’ 1968 remake of the 1966 Boyce-Hart tune “Valleri” in the previous week's episode, "The Monkees Blow Their Minds".

Progressive singer/composer Tim Buckley appeared at show's end (a result of extensive promotion in fan magazines by Micky Dolenz) singing “Song Of The Siren.”

In addition to being the second Monkee-directed episode this season (following the Peter Tork-helmed "The Monkees Mind Their Manor"), "Mijacogeo" (a.k.a. "The Frodis Caper") is also the only episode of the whole Monkees series to be scriptwritten by a Monkee.

MARCH 25, 1972

“The Prince And The Paupers”, Episode No. 21 of The Monkees (prod. #4733, first aired on NBC February 6, 1967) was repeated @ noon EST on CBS, with a new song added: "99 Pounds," written by Jeff Barry.

MARCH 27, 1967

“The Monkees On The Line”
(prod. #47??) first aired @ 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on NBC as the 28th episode of The Monkees.

The sponsor this week was Kellogg’s™, and the featured tune was “Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)” written by Neil Diamond and produced by Jeff Barry.

Trivia Footnote: It was the final episode of The Monkees to be completed for its first season, as well as the last episode to bear the musical supervising stamp of Don Kirshner, who, after releasing the "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"/"She Hangs Out" (#66-1003, withdrawn!) single against a 50% Monkee-control rule, was bounced from The Monkees' project.

MARCH 27, 1971

“Monkee Mother”, Episode No. 27 of The Monkees (prod. # 47??, aired on NBC March 20 and August 28, 1967) was repeated @ 12:30p.m. EST on CBS.

Trivia Footnote: This repeat came exactly 7 days after the date of its original telecast on NBC 4 years prior.

MARCH 28, 1970

Hard to believe it was 41 years ago today...
Now Playing: Law & Order on my DVR

If you were born, got married, or had a child on Monday, March 25, 1968, your longevity matches that of the dearth of The Monkees television series in primetime.

"Mijacogeo" (a.k.a. "The Frodis Caper") (prod. #4722) first aired @ 7:30 p.m. (EDT) on NBC as the 58th and final firstrun episode of The Monkees television series. Micky Dolenz cowrote and directed.

Kellogg's™ sponsored the show that week, and the final Monkees song of the series was "Zor And Zam" written by John & Bill Chadwick and produced by The Monkees. It was the second of 2 Monkees-produced tracks used on The Monkees TV show, following the appearance of The Monkees' 1968 remake of the 1966 Boyce-Hart tune "Valleri" in the previous week's episode, "The Monkees Blow Their Minds".

Progressive singer/composer Tim Buckley appeared at show's end (a result of extensive promotion in fan magazines by Micky Dolenz) singing "Song Of The Siren."

In the Monkee events that followed since the series' demise were the motion picture HEAD, the departure of Peter Tork, the TV special 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, 2 more albums (Instant Replay [#COS-113, issued 2/15/69] and The Monkees Present Micky, David, Michael [#COS-117, issued 10/11/69]) , the departure of Michael Nesmith, and, of course, The End, with a David Jones-Micky Dolenz duo recording one more album together, their ninth, Changes (#COS-119, released 5/70), and release one final single, "Oh My My"/"I Love You Better" (Colgems #66-5011, released 4/70) before officially calling it quits.

"Mijacogeo" (a.k.a. "The Frodis Caper") is undoubtedly the greatest Monkees episode ever made, IMHO. Aside from "The Monkees On The Wheel," I can't think of another episode which comes up a close second. It is not a fond farewell but a mere tribute to The Monkees television series' surreal, off-the-wall, irreverent spirit. And look how it exhibits and lampoons the power of television!

Now Playing: Breakfast With The Beatles on WTIX-FM

MARCH 8, 1967 (Micky Dolenz's 22nd birthday!!)

“A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You” b/w ”The Girl I Knew Somewhere” was released as The Monkees' 3rd single (Colgems #1004). This single marked a major turning point for The Monkees, as Side 1 of the single, Neil Diamond's “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You”, was the last Monkees release by Don Kirshner, who, after releasing the "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You"/"She Hangs Out" (#66-1003, withdrawn!) single against a 50% Monkee-control rule, was bounced from The Monkees' project. Side 2, Michael Nesmith's "The Girl I Knew Somewhere," was the first release to boast The Monkees singing and playing every note, presaging the release of their third album, The Monkees' Headquarters, a good 2 months.

MARCH 10, 1973

The Monkees was preempted on ABC by Soul Unlimited.

MARCH 11, 1968

"The Monkees Blow Their Minds"
first aired @ 7:30 p.m. EST on NBC as the 57th episode of The Monkees.

Kellogg’s™ sponsored the show this week, with “Valleri”, written by Tommy Boyce Bobby Hart and produced by The Monkees, and “Daily Nightly”, written by Michael Nesmith and produced by Chip Douglas, being the featured tunes.

Bat-Trivia Footnote: Burgess Meredith made a cameo in this episode as The Penguin, a sly tip of the wool hat to the pending end of the original ABC-TV run of Batman, which occurred in the exact same week as the airing of this episode.

MARCH 11, 1972

"The Monstrous Monkee Mash", Episode No. 50 of The Monkees (prod. #4767, aired on NBC January 22 and July 8, 1968), was repeated @ noon EST on CBS, with a new song added: "Bye Bye, Baby, Bye Bye," written by Micky Dolenz and Ric Klein.

MARCH 13, 1967

“Monkee Chow Mein”
(prod. #47??) first aired @ 7:30 p.m. EST on NBC as the 26th episode of The Monkees.

Originally sponsored by Kellogg’s™, the episode featured “Your Auntie Grizelda”, written by Jack Keller Diane Hilderbrand and produced by Jack Keller Jeff Barry. For those of you who were tuners-in/turners-on, here are the original commercials you would have seen this week: Kellogg’s™ Raisin Bran, Slickeringo by Yardley, Kellogg’s™ Sugar Frosted Flakes (with Tony The Tiger), Kellogg’s™ Pop Tarts, and The Monkees for Kellogg’s™ Rice Krispies.

MARCH 13, 1971

“The Prince And The Paupers”, Episode No. 21 of The Monkees (prod. #4733, first aired on NBC February 6, 1967), was repeated @ 12:30 p.m. on CBS, with a new song added: "99 Pounds," written by Jeff Barry.
